Lesley’s Girls are an online fashion store who run out of the UK. Bringing you a vintage fix in fashion and lifestyle from as far back as they can get their hands on up until the 1980s. And for the creative amongst you they have a range of vintage sewing and knitting patterns (including some amazing 1950s and 1960s dresses), as well as vintage fabrics so if you can’t find it you can make it. In fashion their speciality is dresses and they simply can’t get enough of them, although one half of Lesley’s girls has a slight obsession with vintage aprons and sewing patterns so if that’s for you head over. They aim to make vintage wearable, usable, easy and affordable; Lesley’s Girls want you to love the romance and beauty of the pieces but want you to use and wear them too, after all that is what they were made for!
Lesley’s Girls are two sisters working together (although Susannah is on a break at present due to the imminent arrival of baby number 3), whilst Janine selects the majority of stock; all stock is hand picked as being a quality item, there are often things which get passed by because they don’t meet their standards even if they fall into the vintage period. Garments are carefully laundered and pressed; any faults are found and, if necessary, sympathetic repairs are made by Susannah. Any repairs are to put the garment back to the original state (and always noted in every case) never to alter the size or design of a garment…. any which are beyond repair are sent to the upcycling pile. Lesley’s Girls are also launching their upcycled range later in the year making good use of these vintage goodies which are no longer usable in their original state.
The shop is named in honour of their mother Lesley who passed away when they were children, she was a great seamstress and had killer eyeliner in the 1960s. Although there is no rhyme or reason for a family to lose their mother so early, it has led to them to be closer and stronger as a family, and ultimately thanks to their close sisterly bond they decided to set this shop up together as a tribute to her memory. Susannah continues the family tradition of sewing, after their mother, grandmother and paternal great-grandmother who was a court dressmaker.
Visit their blog for first views on new stock and discounts, as well as regular vintage fashion and lifestyle articles. The blog has recently featured such highlights as an interview with the Chap Hop legend Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer, or vintage fashion articles such as how to wear gloves, the fashion of the year article for the last British Olympics in 1948 and also the advantages of the right underwear for vintage clothes. They have started a regular upcycling ideas feature too, the first in the series being handkerchiefs, followed by buttons and the promise of more to come.
Lesley’s Girls Vintage on Saturday 10th November will be at Colchester’s regular Junk Jamboree Vintage Fair, come along and say hello!
